ANNOUNCES OVER $635,000 IN NEW GRANTS;

MORE THAN $22.6 MILLION GIVEN SINCE FORMATION

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of more than $637,000 in new grants to 43 non-profit community agencies at a reception at Ballou Recreation Center. The Community Foundation was incorporated in 1996 and has already returned more than $22.6 million in community grants and scholarships.

This year’s grants contain $250,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. A complete listing of the grants awarded from the Danville Regional Foundation’s support is below.

The following grants were awarded from various funds as described below:

The Community Impact Fund is made up of the following unrestricted funds: James Russell Anderson and Zora Carter Anderson Endowment Fund, Buck- Wayland Fund, Faith Home Endowment Fund, Clarence L. Giles Fund, Harry Melton Hood Fund, Elizabeth (Betty) W. Jefferson Fund, D. Webster, Jr., and Elizabeth S. Marshall Fund, James A. and Anne V. Robertson Fund, Barbara H. Sater and Herbert W. Sater Memorial Fund, and John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund

Averett University ($25,000) To assist Averett in updating Main Hall to a 21st century living-learning environment for students. (Community Impact Fund)

Caswell County Partnership for Children ($4,120) To provide seven books to each of the children enrolled in the Raise-A-Reader program. (Community Impact Fund)

Caswell Family Medical Center ($17,300) To expand access to the established “House Calls Program”. (Community Impact Fund)

Chatham Fire Department  ($7,900) To purchase two computer software packages enabling the Chatham Fire Department to digitally manage emergency incident reporting and data.  (W. Earl & Elise M. G. Allen Fund)

City of Danville– Neighbors Helping Neighbors ($48,000) To provide eligible families with assistance to pay utility bills in order to avoid termination of utility services to families considered vulnerable as well as to assist families with the critical need or temporary housing. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Area Choral Arts Society ($2,000) To purchase music, compensate instrumentalists, compensate music director, pay for marketing, venue rental, and custodian.  (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Area Humane Society  ($1,425) To provide free Critter Camp experiences for at-risk and/or disadvantaged youth. (Faye Carter Fund)

 

Danville Community College Educational Foundation ($25,000) To  support expansion of Danville Community College’s Cosmetology program. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Concert Association ($3,500) To offer an unusual one-day Artists-in-Residency Program, conducted by TAO: Drum Heart for area students in three public schools. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Family YMCA ($12,000) To purchase two Expresso Bikes. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Science Center ($20,000) To provide science center visitors with engaging educational exhibits and films. (Community Impact Fund; Faye Carter Fund; Daniel Fund)

Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association ($40,000) To assist cancer patients in the Danville/Pittsylvania area with the cost of their cancer related prescriptions. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Pittsylvania Community Services ($15,000) To increase access to disability services directly impacting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who lack funding options for critical needs. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity ($5,000) To help design and implement a modern, mobile-friendly, dynamic website. (Community Impact Fund; Daniel Fund)

First Tee of Danville ($5,000) To fund 35 participants for the 2018 season. (Community Impact Fund; Ahmed Childrens Fund)

Free Clinic of Danville ($46,000) To underwrite the supply and labor costs of providing care for Free Clinic patients diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. (Community Impact Fund; Daniel Fund)

 

 

HAVEN of the Dan River Region ($1,800) To support residents’ health needs and supplies. (Community Impact Fund)

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Virginia ($18,000) To grant wishes for at least two local children who have been diagnosed with critical illnesses. (Community Impact Fund)

Pelham Community Center ($4,850) To have a transfer switch installed by a NC Licensed Electrician to enable Pelham Community Center to be declared a back-up shelter. (Community Impact Fund)

Pittsylvania County ($11,745) To outfit the Pittsylvania Pet Center with a new commercial washer and dryer. (Community Impact Fund; Animal Welfare Fund; Irving H. and Louise Hambrick Scarce Animal Fund)

Pittsylvania County Parks and Recreation ($25,000) To improve surface conditions on the Ringgold Rail Trail in the eastern part of the County. (Community Impact Fund; Allen Fund)

Purley United Methodist Church ($10,000) To provide children with access to safe and convenient playground facilities. (Community Impact Fund)

River District Festival  ($12,000) To support festivities and events associated with the River District Festival. (Community Impact Fund)

Southern Area Agency on Aging ($15,000) To provide emergency services to older individuals. (Community Impact Fund)

SPCA of Martinsville/Henry County ($2,500) To purchase two stainless steel sinks. (Community Impact Fund)

Virginia Dental Association Foundation ($2,500) To provide case management for the DDS program in Danville and Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

Blairs Fire & Rescue ($25,000) To purchase compliant Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area ($10,000) To provide eleven 1.5 hour monthly workshops for youth, parents or volunteers that focus on the prevention of violence.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area ($21,000) To support the continuation and expansion of its STEM programming. (Gamewood Technology Fund)

Caswell County Parish, Inc ($18,000) To provide assistance to families who are threatened with loss of shelter due to catastrophic events.

Caswell Family Medical Center ($20,000) To the Caswell Cancer Resource Fund to deliver support services to residents of Caswell County that have a cancer diagnosis.

Climax Volunteer Fire Department ($3,250) To purchase a high-pressure air lifting bag kit to complement their vehicle extrication equipment.

Community Improvement Council ($11,350) To create a parent education and resource program for the families of children enrolled in the Head Start program.

Danville Church Based Tutorial Program, Inc.  ($10,000) To purchase 20 computers to assist with reading and math skills.

Danville Speech and Hearing Center ($25,000) To provide financial assistance to help cover the cost of speech therapy and supplies for clients that cannot afford them. (Daniel Fund)

Danville Symphony Orchestra ($6,350) To present a series of four live orchestral music concerts for the general public of Danville, Southside Virginia and Piedmont NC (Daniel Fund)

God’s Storehouse ($20,000) To purchase food for the Malcom Huckabee Backpacks Program. (Daniel Fund)

House of Hope ($8,400) To provide 140 backpacks, including essentials, for the area’s homeless citizens. (Daniel Fund)

Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($12,500) To purchase six two-way portable radios specifically made for emergency service workers for mission-controlled communication.

Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center ($20,000) To purchase food from both local markets as well as Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

Providence Fire and Rescue ($20,000) To replace the 1971 wildland/brush fire apparatus.

Yanceyville Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($15,800) To purchase the equipment necessary to complete and place in service an additional first out fire truck.
